Female youth: These are the women who inspire us

On March 8 the world will celebrate the International Women’s Day, where achievements and milestones made by women are recognized. In Uganda, several women have shattered the proverbial glass ceiling and become an inspiration in their respective fields. Youth Blitz spoke to some female youth to seek their views on which woman inspires them.

Maureen Kyatuhaire, 23, student

I like the way Barbie Kyagulanyi respects her husband and herself. They say behind every string man, there is an equally strong woman. That is what Barbie is to Bobi Wine. Given what her husband has gone through, Barbie is steadfast and strong.

Donah Nakaweesi, 27, businesswoman

I am inspired by Doreen Nyanjura, the deputy lord mayor of Kampala. She is a strong activist who does not fear to fight for her rights. She inspires me because she never gives up on any cause. That is the spirit I admire.

Jolly Birungi, 31, teacher

I like the energy and conviction of Miria Matembe, the former minister for Ethics. She is an honest person and will not beat about the bush. She is fearless and is not easily intimidated.

Saidat Nalukwago, 26, businesswoman

I look up to the Speaker of Parliament Anita Among. I like the way she conducts herself and the confidence she exudes while chairing the house. I also admire how she handles those who criticize her. She just ignores them.

Rita Kalule, 29, journalist

I am inspired by the Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja. She has a lot of energy and drive. She is also down to earth person and I normally see her interacting with local people. Her story is inspiring because she started as a local councilor now she is the prime minister. Her story is really inspiring.

Sharon Kitooke, 25, beautician

Sheebah Karungi is my inspiration. She sings well and has managed to stay on top for a long time. She is also independent minded and does what she likes.

Nulu Babirye, 21, student

Since I want to be a banker, I admire Stanbic Bank’s Anne Jjuko. It is not easy for a woman to head such an important financial institution but I think she has done it well. She has proved that women can climb to the top of the corporate ladder.

Aisha Musoke, 32, teacher

My role model is Winnie Byanyima, the executive director of UNAIDS. She has fought for women’s rights ever since I was young and she is still at it. She has also broken so many barriers to get to where she is. She is a true definition of a feminist.

Irene Namyalo, 27, businesswoman

I admire Mama Janet Museveni. She carries herself with respect. She is not abusive and she cares about the welfare of youths especially women. I would love to meet her and tell her that I admire her.
