Who will lift the 2025 Champions League trophy?
As the 2024/2025 European Champions League gets underway, many youths in Uganda cannot wait to see how their clubs will perform. This year’s competition has also come with a new format. The previous format of eight groups of four teams has been replaced with a league system. This change means 36 teams will now face off in a single league, playing eight different opponents instead of six, and only the top 8 will automatically qualify for the knockout stages. Those placed 9th-24th will have to battle it out in a playoff round. Youth Blitz sounded out some youths on the new format and on which club they think will lift the trophy. Here are their predictions.

Brian Katende, 19, student
No team performs in the Champions League like Real Madrid. The new format might be more intense, but Real Madrid has the mentality and experience to come through in the big games. With players like Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, and Vinicius Junior in their prime, they will be unstoppable.
Annette Kanyike, 28, businesswoman
Manchester City in my view are the hot favourites. The new format just means more chances for Pep Guardiola to outthink his opponents. They’ve shown that they can dominate in different systems and competitions. Remember when they won the Champions League in 2023, they also won the League and FA Cup at home. They have a deep squad with experienced players.
Patricia Amito, 20, beautician.
I will go with Real Madrid. They have taken this trophy numerous times and therefore have the experience. Even when they don’t play well, they find a way to win. I don’t think the new format will affect them in any way. I believe they will come out stronger and adapt quicker than others.
Andrew Mbabazi, 23, boda boda rider
Bayern Munich under Vincent Kompany look like a changed team. They have started well in the league. Bayern has had a few tough seasons, but the new format gives them a fresh chance to showcase their strength. With players like Joshua Kimmich and Jamal Musiala, they have the talent to succeed in this longer group phase.

Real Madrid will retain the cup and now they have a quality squad with the addition of Kylian Mbappe. The new format may add a bit of uncertainty, but Madrid thrives in adversity. If there’s one team you don’t want to face under this new system, it’s them

Manchester City’s squad depth and Pep Guardiola’s experience will make the difference. City has the quality and their squad is deep enough to handle more games, and with Erling Haaland scoring goals on form, I don’t see how anyone can stop them.
Mariam Nalwanga, 22, a student
Liverpool will surprise everyone. Liverpool might be inconsistent in the Premier League, but in Europe, they are a different animal. The new format gives them a chance to regroup. Their new manager, Arne Slot will also want to prove that he has got what it takes to challenge the big clubs in Europe. Don’t be shocked if Liverpool go all the way.
