Youths reveal their favourite Christmas songs
Whenever the festive season sets in, festive melodies fill the air, bringing warmth and nostalgia to many Ugandan households. Locally produced Christmas songs, cherished for their authenticity continue to capture hearts across generations. Youth Blitz asked some youths what their favourite Christmas season songs are.
Unsurprisingly, the legendary Philly Bongole Lutaaya emerged as a favorite among three of the youths. Known for his soulful voice and evocative lyrics, Lutaaya’s Christmas album has become synonymous with the festive season in Uganda. Lutaaya died in 1989 but his music has kept him alive in the hearts of many Ugandans.
Sarah Nakatudde, 24, a university student said whenever I hear ‘Merry Christmas’ by Lutaaya, it takes her back to my childhood.
“The song is not just music; it’s a feeling. It reminds me of family gatherings and the joy of sharing,” she said.
Martin Tumwesigye, 27, a banker, picked ‘Tumusinze’ also by Lutaaya. He said the song is both spiritual and festive.
“It’s the perfect reminder of what Christmas is truly about,” Tumwesigye said.
As for Grace Namisango, 22, a budding entrepreneur, highlights ‘Zukuka’ as her top choice. “This song has a hopeful message. Lutaaya’s voice inspires reflection and renewal during the holiday season.”
Irene Namubiru’s ‘Merry Christmas’, a rendition of Lutaaya’s original song also struck a chord with two of the youths. .
One of them, Diana Kagoya, 26, a digital marketer, said “Namubiru’s song is vibrant and catchy. It feels like a Christmas party anthem, perfect for celebrating with friends.”
Peter Ssali, 25, a photographer said he loves how Namubiru keeps it relatable for today’s generation.
“Her voice brings a unique freshness,” he said.
Interestingly, one of the youth Anita Nabirye, 23, chose Jose Chameleone’s ‘Katupakase’ which on the surface does not sound like a Christmas song.
But Nabirye said Chameleone’s Katupakase song helps to get her into the Christmas spirit.
“It’s impossible to sit still when it’s playing. It brings fun and excitement to the season. It also means lets get up and work,” she says.
Pastor Wilson Bugembe’s ‘Komawo Eka’ resonated deeply with one of the youths for its spiritual undertones and call for family unity.
Jonathan Arinaitwe, 28, a teacher said Christmas is about coming together as a family, and Bugembe captures that sentiment beautifully.
‘Komawo Eka’ is a reminder to reconnect and cherish our loved ones,” he said.
The youths might have had different tastes when it comes to which artist produced the best Christmas song but they all agreed that locally produced Christmas songs hold a special place in their hearts.
“Listening to Ugandan Christmas music feels like home,” Nakatudde said. “It connects us to our roots and reminds us of what truly matters—faith, family, and togetherness.”
As the festive season unfolds, these songs continue to bring joy, evoke memories, and inspire hope, proving that the magic of Christmas lies in its music—and in the hearts of those who listen.
