She Cranes star, May Nuba joins world’s best netball league

Prolific Uganda She Cranes shooter Mary Nuba Cholhok has signed a multi-year deal with  Super Netball side Queensland Firebirds.

Queensland Firebirds are an Australian professional netball team based in Brisbane, Queensland while Australian netball league is considered the world’s best.

Cholhok who has played at two World Cups in 2019 and 2023 for Uganda has been featuring for English Netball Superleague side Loughborough Lightning for the past six seasons but this month joined the ranks in Australia.

“I am so excited to be joining the Firebirds. It has always been my dream to play in the best league in the world. Every Saturday morning when I wake up I watch highlights of SSN and now it is surreal that I am going to be a part of the league,” Nuba said.

“I am so grateful to the Firebirds for this opportunity. I can’t wait to get started and meet the Firebirds family.”

The 27-year-old scored a league-high 975 goals in 2024 season, including 50 goals in the Lightning’s Grand Final win over Manchester Thunder.

Nuba last year guided She Cranes to becoming Africa’s number one in women netball and 5th overall at the Netball World Cup.

She becomes the second Ugandan star to play pro netball in Australia after former She Cranes captain Proscovia Peace previously played for Sunshine Coast Lightning.
