Uganda’s Denis Onyango on 10th heaven in South Africa

Former Uganda national team captain, Denis Onyango has become the most decorated foreigner in South African football after winning his 10th premier league title.

Onyango joined the ranks in South Africa in 2006 with Super Sport United FC but had to wait until 2008 when he won the first title.

He would go on to win three DStv Premiership titles between 2008 and 2010.

Having joined Mamelodi Sundowns in 2014, Onyango has gone on to make history, winning seven league titles with the South African giants.

This month, Onyango’s Sundowns secured their sixth consecutive Premier Soccer League triumph and 13th in total.

With his 10th premier league title, Onyango didn’t only become the most successful foreign player in South Africa’s topflight football, but also the most decorated overall.

Former Mamelodi Sundowns teammate Hlompho Kekana is second on eight, having retired in 2021.

Uganda’s Onyango is a CAF Champions League winner, has a CAF Super Cup, two Telkom Cups, Two Nedbank Cups, one MTN 8 Cup and an African-based Player of the Year crown.

He has also played in the FIFA Club World Cup and featured in CAF best XI on several occasions.

In 2017, Onyango as captain guided Uganda to the African National Cup finals ending a 39 year old wait.
