Azawi stamps her presence with Sankofa album launch

It was an unforgettable experience at Kampala Serena Hotel as Priscilla Zawedde best known as Azawi launched her new album, Sankofa.

Making her breakthrough in January 2020 after releasing her first single titled Quinamino, not even the Covid pandemic could stop her as she went on to record a number of songs and collaborations with big shots in the music industry including Nina Roz, Vinka, Eddy Kenzo among others.

Coming into concert, the 26 year old singer, signed to Swangz Avenue, had just released a  17-track album featuring several artistes including Elijah Kitaka, Sauti Sol, Konshens, Ben Soul, and Mike Kayihura.

Serena was therefore the venue to unveil the album to her fanbase that has been expectant.

Stepping on the stage at around 9pm while Kika Troupe played, the audience was thrown into frenzy as Azawi kicked off her performance with Champion from Africa, one of the 17 tracks on her new album.

To many, it was deliberate that the Afrobeats singer starts with the song that speaks to her as an African champion as Double Black Band backed her up.

The band assigned to her by her Swangz Avenue managers has been working with Azawi for at least the past one year, their combination at Serena was therefore a match made in heaven.

She continued to enthrall the audience with hits including Outside and Lo Fit, Ten Over 10, Omwenge, Fwa fwa,  Slow Dancing, Tuli wabweru and  Quinamino among others from both the new album and the first one as she wowed the audience and took the audience through a magical journey of her music.

“I wanted Sankofa to be different because every song on this album is a story about my life experiences. I have been the most vulnerable to my fans on this album,” Azawi said.

Singing ‘Majje’, a collaboration with Fik Fameica was an icing on the cake at Kampala Serena Hotel whereas other artistes like Elijah Kitaka also left lasting impressions.

To many, the concert was one where Azawi stamped her position in Uganda and the African music industry as she showed her mettle and left an indelible mark in the hearts of her fans.
