Dramatic end as Vipers pip SC Villa to Uganda Premier League title

Vipers SC won their sixth Uganda Premier League title but the final day of the league wasn’t devoid of drama.

Going into the final day, record champions SC Villa sat comfortably on the top of the 16 point long on 52 points, two ahead of placed Vipers SC and Kampala Capital City Authority FC in second and third positions respectively but separated by goal difference.

The record champions only needed three points to secure a league title that has eluded them for the last 19 years.

At their home in Wankulukuku, it was a beehive of festivities from the sea of blue as fans prepared to lift the league title after 19 years of waiting.

Inside the stadium, a number of journalists assembled their gadgets as they waited to witness the momentous occasion.

On the field, things turned out different as tax collectors, Uganda Revenue Authority (URA FC) spoiled the party for the home side after a 61st minute Najib Fesali header off a Saidi Kyeyune free kick sealed SC Villa’s fate.

Whereas the Villa fans believed and prayed for the intervention from elsewhere, those hopes were dashed.

At both Kitende, the home of Vipers SC and Lugogo, for KCCA FC, it was raining goals.

Vipers whipped Busoga United five goals to nothing, a score line replicated by KCCA FC.

The Kitende based side finished on 53 points, the same points as KCCA FC but with a superior goal difference.

SC Villa finished third on 52 points to see one of the most dramatic ends to any Uganda Premier League season.

Vipers will now represent Uganda in the CAF Champions League, the most prestigious club football showpiece next season.
