Uganda’s Denis Onyango wins another continental accolade

Former Uganda Cranes captain, Denis Onyango has further conquered African football after winning yet another accolade in the game of soccer.

Onyango was part of the Mamelodi Sundowns team that won the inaugural African Football League.

South Africa’s Mamelodi beat Wydad Casablanca of Morocco 2-0 in Pretoria in front of the 50,000 crowd which also included the presidents of FIFA and CAF, Gianni Infantino and Patrice Motsepe respectively.

Success meant that Onyango’s Sundowns bagged four million dollars, the equivalent of winning the South African league five times.

Speaking about the feat, Onyango expressed happiness about yet another achievement in his football career but noted nothing has come easy.

“Success is not merely a result of luck or innate talent. It’s a product of discipline, unwavering perseverance, and the wisdom to extract valuable lessons from your setbacks. Expect to encounter stumbles, falls, and failures along the way; they are an inevitable part of the journey. The key is to continue learning from each experience, using them as stepping stones toward your goals. Success is built on this foundation of continuous growth and resilience,” he posted on his X page.

In March this year, Onyango became the most decorated foreigner in South African football after winning his 10th premier league title.

Onyango is also a CAF Champions League winner, has a CAF Super Cup, two Telkom Cups, Two Nedbank Cups, one MTN 8 Cup and an African-based Player of the Year crown.

He has also played in the FIFA Club World Cup and featured in CAF best XI on several occasions.

Onyango joined the ranks in South Africa in 2006 with Super Sport United FC and won his first title in 2008 before winning three DStv Premiership titles between 2008 and 2010.

Having joined Mamelodi Sundowns in 2014, Onyango has gone on to make history, winning seven league titles with the South African giants.

Onyango is surely the most successful Ugandan football player.
