Be it in politics, sports or entertainment, these personalities stood out in the year 2023 .

Peter Ogwang

The sports minister has led a vibrant sector in the year 2023 with a number of achievements under his shoulders.

Away from the victories of the national basketball team and netball team, Ogwang has been at the front of ensuring Namboole stadium is rehabilitated.

He has personally inspected the ongoing rehabilitation works .

“I want to confirm that we will be able to open Namboole for our next game in Uganda, a World Cup qualifier in March. As for now, there are one or two issues that need to be done, but so far, almost 90% of the renovation works are complete,” Ogwang said .

Ghetto kids

The Ugandan dance group had their best ever year as they carried the country’s flag high on the international scene.

They started the year by breaking barriers when they participated in Britain’s Got Talent

The Ugandan group had a stellar performance at this year’s Britain’s Got Talent, Britain’s televised talent competition where groups and individuals showcase their talent in various categories on a stage before a panel of judges.

The Ugandan group didn’t just participate but reached the competition’s finals, having had a stellar performance which saw them set the record when they received the golden buzzer in the middle of a performance, the first time in history this was being done during an act.

They have since been selected among 40 acts set to the take part in America’s Got Talent’s Fantasy League that will premiere on Monday, January 1, 2024.

 They also performed at the CAF 2023 awards in Morocco.

Gazelles

The Uganda women national basketball team took everyone by storm to have a stellar performance at the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket tournament in Kigali.

The Ugandan team finished seventh in the tournament, the best ever finish for Uganda in a tournament they have participated in for the third time.

This feat saw the team voted as the second most improved team for girls’ basketball in the world for the period 2021-23 by the Federation of International Basketball Association.

The  National Federation Progression Awards ceremony held in Manila as a part of the XXII FIBA Congress, named Uganda’s female basketball team second in the top three national teams after getting the second highest number of ranking points gained between 2021 and 2023.

Uganda came second below Slovenia but also above Portugal, Tanzania, Samoa who tied in the third position.

Netball team

Just like the female basketball team, Uganda’s netball team, theShe Cranes had a year to remember in 2023 having left a mark at this year’s Netball World Cup after finishing 5th overall, and number one in Africa.

At the end of the tournament, the She Cranes secured a memorable 49-47 victory against hosts South African to ensure the East African nation finished fifth overall and took the number one spot among the African nations.

It was a year to remember for the team.

Spice Diana

Singer Diana Namukwaya also known as Spice Diana was among those who will live to remember the year 2023 for what she achieved.

Apart from releasing several songs and doing several collaborations with fellow artists, the singer held a successful concert.

Dubbed ‘Siri regular’ off her latest song Siri regular, the singer proved she is not regular as the concert venue atthe Lugogo Cricket Oval in Kampala proved too small for her.

The concert left many yearning for more of Spice Diana as she cemented her place in Uganda’s music industry.

Spice Diana’s songs have continued to top the music charts in Uganda throughout the year.

She has also got several endorsements and deals .

Spice Diana recently unveiled a house she has constructed for her grandmother.

Alien Skin

Described by many as being controversial, Alien Skin whose real names are Patrick Mulwana rose to the Ugandan scene but remained as vocal as possible.

Having released his first Sitya Danger hit, the musician has continued to be a sensation especially among the urban youth.

He released many other songs like Twayiseko Dda, Party, Sitaani, Mataala that have dominated the local music scene.

Alien Skin later held his maiden concert at Freedom City as he broke records on many fronts.

It was the first time that someone considered an up and coming artiste had filled the 4,000 capacity hall but also promoted the concert for less than a week.

He has continued to challenge the status quo, especially in Uganda’s music industry weighing up to many established musicians.

This state of affairs has attracted a number of enemies in the same measure as fans he has garnered.

Many have since predicted his downfall but by the look of things, Alien Skin has remained standing as he continues to dominate debate, especially around the music industry in the country.
